How to Organize My Life in 30 Days

I once set out to fix all of my life in 2 days. By Sun dusk I had a huge pile of junk, a sore back, and no plan. Does that ring true for you? If so, you are not the only one.
Here is the deal. Your life did not get this way in 2 days. So it will not mend in 2 days. A big dash is fun for 1 hour, then the mess is back. I know, as I did it.
So I made a slow way. It has 30 days. Each day, you fix 1 snag. Just 1. That is all.
You do not need cash for this. No new bins, no big buys, no paid apps. A pen and a note pad work fine, or the note app on your phone.
Here is my rule for the plan: cut, sort, auto, keep. Cut what you do not need. Sort what is left. Let a tool run what it can. Then keep it up.
One fact to know. A 2009 UCL test saw that a new act took 66 days on avg to hold. The span was 18 to 254 days. So 30 days is not a cure. It is a firm base, and that is a big win.
Day 1: Find What Jams Your Day
Do not tidy yet. Now look. See what jams up your day. I did this with a pen and it hurt a bit. I saw that I had to hunt for my keys each day. I put off the same 3 jobs. I made the same food call 5 x a week.
Your task: make a Life Jam List. Jot down 10 bits that make your day hard. Say a lost key, a full mail box, a dead cord, or a sink full of dish. Each one is tiny. But they add up. 5 min now and 10 min then.
Do not fix a bit of it now. Just list them. A jam you can see is a jam you can beat.
Day 2: Make a Not Now List
Most tips tell you what to add. This one tells you what to drop. Your head has a lot of junk in it. A plan you will not act on. A buy you do not need yet. A job that can wait. A vow you made long ago that no more fits.
Fold a page in 3: Do Now, Do Soon, and Skip. Be bold. Put at least 5 in Skip.
I put “buy a bike” in Skip. My head felt calm in one sec. Skip is not a fail. It is a rest for that plan. You can pick it up when you have room.
Day 3: Draw a 1 Page Life Map
Grab 1 page. Fold it in 8 bits. Name each bit: Home, Work, Cash, Body, Kin and Pals, Phone and Web, Aims, and Duty.
Under each, jot down this: What is fine? What is a mess? What do I skip?
Few of us ever see all of life on 1 page. It can hurt. But it can give calm too.
This page is your map for the next 27 days. Keep it near. I tape mine to the wall by my desk.
Day 4: Plug Your Time Leak
Do not build a neat plan yet. Just watch. For 1 day, jot down how your time goes.
Work. A trip or a ride. Phone use. Food. Home jobs. Rest. And all the odd jobs that pop up.
Now mark each leak. A leak is time that goes out and pays you back zip. Mine was 40 min a day of apps in bed. Ouch.
You do not need to quit all of them. You just need to see them. Once you see a leak, you can plug it.
Day 5: Pick 3 Set Points
A plan for each min dies by noon. So skip that. Pick 3 set points: Dawn, Noon, and Dusk.
Dawn point: 1 act you do when you wake. Say a cup of tea and a look at your list. Noon point: a stop. Eat, move, and see what is left. Dusk point: wrap up the day (see Day 14).
3 points give form and not a cage. The rest of the day can flex. I like that, as I hate a hard plan.
Day 6: Make a Bare Min Day
Some days go bad. A kid is sick. The bus is late. Your head is fog. On days like that, a full plan just adds load.
So make a bare min day. Pick only what must be done: 1 key job, a wash, real food, 1 key text, 10 min of tidy, and bed on time.
On a bad day, do just that list and stop. 1 bad day will not turn into a bad week. That alone is a win.
Day 7: Set Up Your Week Redo
Pick a time each week. Mine is Sun at 6. It runs 30 to 60 min. Grab a cup of tea and sit down.
Run the same steps each time. See what is on tap this week. Scan old jobs. See what home is low on. Plan food. Look at cash. Pack what you need. Pick 3 top aims.
Its the glue of this plan. It keeps the rest in line.
Day 8: Tidy What You Touch Most
Do not try for all of your home. Pick the ones you hit at dawn: bed side, door, desk, bath top, cook top, and 1 junk tray.
Goal: make what you use each day easy to grab. Move the junk out. Put the best gear up top. A mug for tea on the desk? Keep it near.
I did all 6 in 1 hour. My dawn took 10 min less.
Day 9: Give Each Item a Home
Here is a term I like: find cost. It is the work you pay each time you hunt for an item. You pay in time and in mood.
Ask: in what spot will I look for this? Put it in that spot for good. Keys on a hook by the door. Meds in the same box. Tape in the same tray.
Pick the spot your hand goes to on its own.
Day 10: Make a Drop Pad
Some gear has no home. It hops from sofa to desk to bed. Mail, keys, a cord, a bill, bags, and gear that must go out.
Make 1 drop pad near the door. A tray, a bowl, or a bag on a hook. Drop it all here.
Then, once a week, sort the pad. Bin what is old. File what you need. Take out what must go.
Day 11: Sort Your Wear by Use
Do not just sort by look. Sort by use: each day, work, out, gym, cold days, hot days, and big days.
Next, spot what you skip. If you did not wear it in 90 days, it just eats room. Put it in a bag. Give it to a pal or sell it.
My dawn is now so fast, as I see all my best wear in one look.
Day 12: Fix the Half Tidy Mess
They are not bad. They are just not good. A junk tray. A chair full of wear. A bath top. A desk top. A bed side.
Pick 3. Pull all out. Wipe it down. Put back only what has a use.
It took me 20 min for all 3. And the feel? Like a sigh.
Day 13: Do Not Run Out of Soap
List the gear that must not run out. Bath gear. Tidy gear. Wash soap. Work gear. And food you use a lot, like rice, oil, tea, and salt.
Make 3 cols on a page: Low, Buy Soon, and Full. Move the item to Low when it runs low.
At your Sun redo, buy what sits in Low. Now you shop once, not 5 x.
Day 14: Make a 15 Min Dusk Redo
This is a tiny close for your day. I give it 15 min. Then I stop.
My steps: put back all that is out, wipe the main top, pack for the next day, look at the plan for it, deal with dish and wash, and jot down what is left in my head.
That last step is a gem. Once it is down on a page, my head lets go.
A calm dusk is a gift to dawn.
Day 15: Tidy Your Phone Main Page
Do not try to drop 300 apps. Just look at the page you see 100 x a day. Cut apps that suck up time. Cut apps you do not use. Cut 2 apps that do 1 job. Cut the junk.
Keep your top apps near your thumb.
My page went from 24 apps to 8. Now I open my phone with a goal, not on a whim.
Day 16: Sort Your Apps by Use
A to Z is a poor way to sort. Sort by what you do. Sets like: Talk, Cash, Work, Read, Ride, Gear, and Fun.
Name each set with 1 word. Not a cute one. When I am in a rush, I need to find the app in 2 sec.
Put your dawn apps near the top.
Day 17: Cut the Buzz
Buzz adds to the mess. Each buzz tugs you off task. Work by Dr. Mark at UCI says it can take close to 23 min to get back on task post a stop. So 1 ping can cost you more than you feel.
Sort each app into 3 bins: Must Ping Me, Can Wait, and Drop It.
Must: a call from kin, bank news, and your ride app. Can Wait: chat apps and shop apps. Drop: a game, ads, and news.
Go to your phone set up and turn them off. It runs 10 min. You will feel the calm in 1 day.
Day 18: Sort Your Mail by Next Step
Do not make 30 bins. I did once. I did not use them.
Use just 4: Act, Wait, Keep, and Pay.
Act is for mail that asks a move of you. Wait is for mail when you wait on a word from them. Keep is for info you may need. Pay is for what you paid or owe.
Once a mail is done, move it out of the box. Zero mail is not the goal. A calm box is.
Day 19: Make a File Plan
Pick 1 plan for all your docs. Use the same top bins on your phone, your PC, and the web. My top bins: Home, Work, Cash, Pics, and Side Jobs.
Name each file the same way: date, then what it is, then who. Like this: 2026 10 03 gas bill. A name like that is easy to find, and docs line up by date.
Day 20: Tidy Your Web Tabs
Each open tab is a tiny tug on your head. Shut all you do not need. Save the best in a Read Soon list.
Then scan your kept list and drop the junk. Wipe the old docs you got from the web.
Make 1 rule for a tab you want but do not use now: save it to Read Soon. Max 5 open at a time.
Day 21: Make a Wait For List
This is a gem that few use. Jot down all you wait on. A call back. Pay owed to you. A doc. A box that is on the way. A yes or a no. A date.
Next to each, add who and the day you made the ask. Now your head can stop the “Did I miss it?” loop. You can look at the list. If it is on the list, it is safe.
Once a week, ping them if it is late. I get alot of calm from this one.
Day 22: Set Up Jobs on Loop
Some jobs come back and back: a bill, wash day, a food run, a home fix, a due date.
Put each in a spot that says when. A cal app is good. Set each job to loop. Bill on the 5th. Wash on Tue and Fri. Food run on Sat.
Why? A job in a cal lets your head rest. Your cal does the work for you.
Day 23: Face What You Put Off
List each pick that you put off. What to buy. What to end. What to fix. What plan to keep. Who to say no to.
Now sort them. Some are real. Some are just fear. For a real one, set a day to pick. For a fear one, ask: what is the bad case? Most of the time it is tiny.
Day 24: Give Each Fact 1 Home
Pick where each type of info will live. Cal: dates. Task list: jobs. Note app: facts. Web disk: docs. Key app: your log in info.
The aim is to stop the same fact in 5 apps. Mine was a mess: a date in my note app, my cal, and on a slip. Now it is in 1 spot. Done.
Day 25: Make a Cash Map
Keep it easy. You do not need a big plan. Just jot down: cash in, a fixed bill, free spend, a bill due soon, cash put by, and a plan you pay on loop.
The goal is not to be tough. It is just to see. Many of us fear to look at our cash. I did. But a real look cuts fear fast.
Use a note app or a page. 1 page is fine.
Day 26: Find the Cost You Do Not See
Look at your bank news for the last 90 days. Hunt for: an old plan you let slip, 2 apps with the same job, a club you do not use, auto pay, and tiny fees.
Make 3 bins: Keep, Look, and Cut. Cut those now. I saw 3 I did not use. That was a good win.
Day 27: Make a Future Me Box
Pick 1 spot for what you will need down the road: docs, due date, key phone nums, home info, proof of buy, long aims, and a note for a bad day.
See it as a gift from you to you. Some day you will hunt for a doc in a rush. This box will save you.
Keep a hard copy of the top 3 docs too. A phone can die.
Day 28: Form Your Own Rule Set
Time to make this plan yours. Do not copy mine. Jot down 5 to 10 tiny ones. Here are a few from me:
- If a job is under 2 min, do it now.
- Each item you use a lot must have a home.
- Keep no task just in your head.
- Scan your cal each dusk.
- Do not add a new tool till the old one dies.
Your’s will be best. Mine may not fit you.
Day 29: Do Your 30 Day Look Back
Open your Day 1 list and Day 3 map. Now ask: What got easy? What jams me yet? What did I stop? What plan had a win? What plan was too hard? What do I miss? What area is due a redo?
Then make a 3 col grid: Keep, Change, and Drop. Be real. A plan that ate 20 min each day is too much. Cut it.
My look back said I used my Wait list all the time, but I let my cash map die by day 20. So I made it a once a week step.
Day 30: Make Your Life Plan
Time to join all the bits. You now have all the gear. Let us put it in 1 loop.
- Each day: Scan your top aims. Follow your 3 set points. Jot down new jobs at once. Do your 15 min dusk redo.
- Each week: Scan your cal. Scan your job list. Look at cash. Buy what is low. Tidy the area you use most.
- Each 30 days: Look at your aims. Look at each fee you pay. Tidy 1 hard area. See what is due soon. Fix your plan if need be.
- Each 90 days: Look at your big aims. Drop old vows. Redo any old plan. Pick what gets your care next.
Copy this onto 1 page. It is your own life plan. Mine is on my wall.

What If You Miss a Day?
You will miss a day. I did, 4 x. Do not go back to Day 1. That is the trap. Just pick up with the next day. If you miss 3 or more, look at your map and go on.
A day off is not a fail. Your plan is a map and not a test.
The 10 Min Plan for Busy Days
Busy? Use the same plan, but cut each day to 10 min. On Day 8, tidy 1 spot only. On Day 17, fix just 3 apps. On Day 25, jot down only cash in and cash out.
You will get to the end, just a bit slow.
What Not to Sort on Day 1
Skip the hard ones for now. Skip gear that tugs at you, such as a gift from kin or old pics. Skip a huge web disk of 20 yrs of docs too.
They eat a ton of will and give back a bit. Win small, then go big. By Day 30 you will be set for them.
When Your Head Is Full
If this is you, read this 2 x. Do not make a new huge list. That just adds load. Cut down on picks. Pick 1 tiny act. Sip some tea. Make your bed. Wash 1 dish. Text 1 pal back. Then pick the next one.
Tiny acts give you a push. If it is too deep to bear, talk to a doc or a pal you know.
How Do You Know Your Plan Is a Win?
Here is what to see:
- You find gear fast.
- You miss less.
- Your home gets back to tidy fast.
- You use less time to run the plan.
If a plan eats more work than the mess, drop it.
The Bin Test
When you want to buy a bin, stop and ask: Do I have too much gear? Can I use a box I own? Did I give this a try for 1 week?
Most of the time the fix is less gear, not a new bin.
Wrap Up
See Day 30 in your head. You have 30 tiny wins. Your life will have bad days. Mine does. But it can be calm, and you can find your keys.
You are close, so pick Day 1 now. Grab a pen. Jot down 10 jams. I am with you.
