Fun Facts And Stats About America’s Biggest Cities
New York City is in a league of its own, with over 8.5 million people. That is more than twice the population of Los Angeles, the second largest city. Together, the top 50 cities are home to tens of millions of Americans.
Texas is the big winner on this list, with 6 cities in the top 50, more than any other state. California comes next with 9 cities, including 4 in the top 15. And here is a fun fact: Jacksonville, Florida is the largest city in the U.S. by land area among the top 50, covering over 747 square miles, because its city limits include almost the whole county.
Cities That Moved Up And Down The List
City rankings change over time as people move. In recent years, fast-growing cities like Fort Worth, Austin, and Raleigh have climbed the list, while some older industrial cities have slipped down. Fort Worth recently passed the 1 million mark, joining the small club of U.S. cities with seven-figure populations. Only 12 cities in the whole country have more than 1 million residents.
Why Some Famous Cities Are Missing
You might notice that some very famous places are not on the list. That is because this ranking counts only people living inside official city limits, not the wider metro area. Atlanta, for example, is only 36th by city population, but its metro area has over 6 million people. Miami is 41st as a city, but the Miami metro area is one of the biggest in the country. City limits can be strange like that.
Easy Geography Tips To Learn U.S. City Populations Fast
Here is my favourite trick for this quiz: learn the cities in groups of ten. Master 1 to 10 first, then 11 to 20, and so on. It feels way less scary that way. Another tip is to link each city to something famous: Space Needle means Seattle, jazz means Kansas City, the Alamo means San Antonio. Your brain remembers stories better than plain lists, so give every city a little story and watch your score climb.
Conclusion
Fifty cities, one quiz, and a whole lot of geography packed into a few fun minutes. Whether you scored 15 or 50, you now know more about America’s biggest cities than most people do. Play it again tomorrow and see if you can beat your score. And do not forget to challenge your friends, because nothing is more fun than a little friendly competition.
