Shirk means to Associating someone with Allah in lordship(Ruboobiyyat), in worship (Uloohiyyat) or in the requirements of attributes (Asma o Sifat)۔
The word shirk is an Arabic word .It means:
Association (with God)
1-It is major sin in Islam, as described;
اِنَّ الشِّرۡكَ لَـظُلۡمٌ عَظِيۡمٌ ۞
Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
Surah Luqman: Ayah No 13
2-The first sin from which Allah has forbidden to all human specially Muslims is shirk as described in the Quran:
وَاِذۡ اَخَذۡنَا مِيۡثَاقَ بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ لَا تَعۡبُدُوۡنَ اِلَّا اللّٰهَ
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allah"
Surah Baqarah; Ayah No 83
قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا اَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَيۡكُمۡ اَلَّا تُشۡرِكُوۡا بِهٖ شَيۡئًـــا
Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him,
Surah Anaam;Ayah No 151
3-The rare sin which will not forgive by Allah SWT as;
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ اَنۡ يُّشۡرَكَ بِهٖ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُوۡنَ ذٰ لِكَ لِمَنۡ يَّشَآءُ ۚ وَمَنۡ يُّشۡرِكۡ بِاللّٰهِ فَقَدِ افۡتَـرٰۤى اِثۡمًا عَظِيۡمًا ۞
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
Surah an Nisaa ; Ayah No 48
